Dogs enjoy swimming too – but how do you look after their skin and coat?
Beach life is a key part of the summer for people and dogs alike. Many dogs love to swim. It’s important for the continued health of your dog’s skin, paws and coat that they are dried thoroughly after a swim or wash. You can also help your pet’s skin maintain its natural protective layer with BERRYOMG® Silk & Shine, a dietary supplement containing essential omega fatty acids.
“Swimming is definitely a recommended form of exercise for dogs. For dogs with osteoarthritis in particular, a moderate amount of swimming is a good way to strengthen the muscles and possibly lose weight without putting much stress on the joints,” says veterinarian and animal nutrition expert Johanna Anturaniemi.
However, bathing can be hard on a dog’s fur and skin, especially if they can’t be dried properly without delay. If your dog’s paws, skin or ears are easily irritated by getting wet, good drying after a swim is the most important thing of all.
“If your dog has very sensitive and dry skin or a thick coat that stays wet for a long time, the skin can become irritated more easily. Hot spots – that is, an skin inflammations that are confined to a certain area – can also form on the skin. In such cases, you should think twice about whether your dog should be allowed to swim at all.”
Skin prone to dryness can be moisturised internally with an omega fatty acid supplement such as BERRYOMG® Silk & Shine. It is a dietary supplement for cats and dogs that is designed to care for the skin’s natural protective layer, prevent dry skin and help treat itchiness.
What is a hot spot?
A hot spot is a skin inflammation that is confined to a certain area – but it can spread very quickly. Hot spots usually occur during hot and humid weather, and especially in dogs that have a thick coat and love to swim. The moisture trapped under the fur provides a good breeding ground for bacteria, and the skin can become infected when the dog scratches.
“Allergies, a foreign substance, ear infections or skin conditions can also predispose the skin to developing hot spots, as itching or irritation leads to scratching or licking that can break the skin and allow bacteria to multiply in the affected area,” Anturaniemi explains.
Summertime grooming: to trim or not to trim?
Should dogs with long and dense fur be given a trim in the summer? According to Anturaniemi, this is not necessary, at least not for regulating body temperature, as dogs do not sweat.
“Trimming off the dense fur for the summer helps your pet’s body to regulate its temperature. Fur actually keeps the skin cooler, as it protects from the sun, among other things.
Fur care depends on the breed and the individual animal. The same general rules for looking after a dog’s fur apply in the summer as in other times of year: for one thing, brushing is important to prevent the fur from becoming matted.
“If your dog spends a lot of time in the woods in the summer, you can trim the longest hairs with scissors, for example on the legs, around the hindquarters and on the tail. This prevents twigs, sticks and moss from clinging to the coat.
